Is It Time For A New Sign?
The church is an ever changing organism. The membership is always changing.
All the members are growing older. As they grow older sometimes they cannot attend as much as they used to. Eventually they will leave this world to move to a far better one.
Sometimes members move. When they move it may be inconvenient or impossible to still attend the same church.
Unfortunately there are other members who simply quit coming.
Losing members is just part of being a church. It is to be expected but if we do not want to see our church die we need to always be bringing in new people to the church. Our prayer is that they join the church when they are ready.
Getting new people into the church is not easy of course or our church would be overflowing. As pastor I am often thinking about how we can get not only our current members to attend more but how we can get new people into the church.
The first thing that comes to mind is we need to get the attention of the people who pass by every day. Epler is a busy street and lots of people go by every day. We have a nice sign but we do not have a great sign. Sometimes I think it might be nice to have one of those flashing and scrolling signs all lit up and always getting people’s attention.
I did some research on them and they cost about $4000-$12000 dollars! That is a lot of money and while I am not opposed to a new sign I am not recommending we go out and buy one.
I am not recommending that we purchase one of those attention getting signs because I think there is a better way we can get people’s attention. Each of us should be a living, breathing and moving sign for our church. It is our job to get the attention of the people around us. We should be talking about our Lord and our church on a regular basis. We should be telling people what the Lord has done for us and how we are benefited by attending church. That is a sign that will get people’s attention.
And the truth is until we are doing that a big neon sign is not going to do us much good.
Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
Sister Morgan Moran will be participating in the Relay For Life at IUPUI to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. If you would like to support this effort there will be a purple bucket in the front of the church.
