The Wrong Prayer?

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13

Does it ever trouble you that so many people who make no effort to serve God in his church want to run to the church for prayer when they have a need? Or they get on Facebook asking for prayer? Even when these people are not living in gross sin, and they often are, is the fact they are not coming to church sin enough to wonder why they want prayer? Are they asking God to bless them when they will not do the least for Him?

Surely God loves it when people come to him in prayer but is prayer only turning to God when we need something? Is prayer meant to be more than that? Part of the Lord’s prayer was to deliver us from evil. When these people who are content to live in the world without regard for God, his word or his church ask everyone to pray for them how often do you see anything about asking the Lord help them overcome their sin? How often do you see them asking the Lord’s direction in their life or for forgiveness? In truth are they not asking the Lord to give them the ability to continue life without Him?

Which would make me wonder do we help them or hinder them by asking the Lord to bless them when they will not bless God? Certainly I am not saying we should not pray for everyone that asks us to do so. I am not saying that we should not pray for them when they are sick, they lose their jobs or their families are falling apart.

What I am saying is that we need to go beyond their prayer request and pray for these individuals to truly seek God’s will. The Lord often brings trouble into someone’s life for the purpose of drawing them unto Himself. As we pray for those people out in the world living in sin let our greater prayer be that they may see the hand of God reaching out for them.

Prayer is not the last thing we need to do for these people. We also need to speak to them about their condition. We need to warn them that the troubles they face today are only the precursor to greater troubles to come if they do not heed the warning.
