Who Is Changing Whom?
“I believe that one reason why the church of God at this present time has so little influence over the world is because the world has so much influence over the church.”
For those who are not familiar with Charles Spurgeon he was a preacher in the late who preached in England from the mid 1800’s until the late 1800’s. He preached to thousands at a time. In fact, at one point in his ministry you had to have a ticket to get a seat to hear him, such was the demand. He was probably the most famous preacher of his time and is still highly regarded to this day.
I have read many of his sermons and some are quite enjoyable as well as instructive. Though I would consider to be correct on most issues there are some areas where I would disagree with him.
I certainly agree with the quote above. You probably do too. What is frightening is that he wrote that over 150 years ago. If it was true in Spurgeon’s day how much more true is it in ours?
While it is true Jesus sent us into the world He did not intend for us to become like the world. We are supposed to be different. Our standards and morals are supposed to be higher. They are meant to be founded on God’s eternal word and principles not what is popular and in fashion. Our conduct is meant to better because we know better. We are meant to go out into the world but we are not supposed to bring it back into the church.
They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
