A New Year And A New You?
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The New Year is almost here. Like me you may be wondering where the old year went. You had plans that were not accomplished. Maybe you had resolutions that were not kept. Either way the year is almost over.
We cannot go back and undo the things we did nor can we go back and do the things that have been left undone. We cannot live in or change the past. We must live the day we have before us today. How we live that day, however, can change our future.
Many people like to start the year out making a resolution to change things. There is nothing wrong with that. Many of those resolutions have something to do with a diet. I know I certainly need to get on one myself.
However, there are more important things than losing some natural weight. We all carry around some spiritual weight that we need to shed. It is called sin. While a diet heavy on sugars and fast food will make you naturally sluggish a life heavy with sin will make you spiritually sluggish.
Have you ever wanted to truly do something for the Lord and just did not have the strength? Or have you wanted to feel his loving arms around you and just felt all alone? That is what I mean by spiritually sluggish. It is a result of sin in your life. You are not alone. I feel the same way a lot of the time.
The answer, as we are told in Hebrews, is to put sin down. Easier said than done isn’t it?
Putting the obvious sin in our life down is one thing. We also need to replace it. If you want to lose weight you cannot just quit eating anything. You have to replace bad foods with good ones. So it is with serving the Lord. It is not enough to quit using inappropriate language and hating our brother. We need to replace those things with speaking the word of God and loving our brother.
There are still a few days left in this year. Use them to examine yourself and see where changes need to be made. You do not have to wait till Wednesday to change your life but you do need to change it. Put away the things that are dragging you down and pick up the ones that will help you.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
1 Corinthians 13:11
