Tis The Season
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
It’s that time of year again. Some of you may have already survived Black Friday and its cousin Cyber Monday is almost here. Typical of the holiday spirit there have been fights and arrests as people fought over the latest must have bargain. Hopefully, if you have already ventured out to prove your love to someone by buying them something, you did not lose your religion while doing so.
While we all are all contemplating trees with lights and a fat man in a red suit we would do well to remember the real meaning of the season, the birth of a child. This child was unlike any other that had ever been or ever would be born. He was not the son of any man. He was (and still is) the son of God. That is an important fact to remember.
It is also a fact that the world is attempting to destroy our confidence in the Bible. They have attacked our origins and they have attacked this child’s birth. It is impossible, they say, for a child to be born without a father. Normally I would agree with them but when God intervenes the impossible becomes the possible. God intervened in the life of Mary.
The fact that God intervened and sent his own son makes all the difference in the world. Every child born into this world who has a normal dad is born as a sinner. We are born in the image of our father. Jesus did not have a normal dad but he was born in the image of his father, God. God the Father is perfect. God the son was born perfect (and he still is!)
The fact that Jesus was born perfect, that is without sin, is very important. He did not come into this world just to be an example of what we should be. He came into this world to die for our sins. If he had been a sinner he would have had to die for his own sins. But he was not so he could die for our sins.
As December opens up let’s make sure we are in the right season. This should not be the season of fighting over gifts. It should be the season of celebrating the fact our God came into this world to save such as you and I.
