Giving Thanks To The Lord

And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

Acts 9:1

If you have read the Bible you know that God’s people have often been persecuted for serving God. They have lost their property, their freedom and even their lives because they were determined to serve God.

Even after the Bible was written God’s people continued to suffer. They did not suffer because they were thieves or murderers. In fact they were preaching and practicing a message that Jesus summed up as love God and love your neighbor. Still they were persecuted and killed.

Even in America persecution continued until various colonies and finally the Federal Government provided for religious freedom. Of all the freedoms we have in the United States that one is greatest.

Men and women may now worship according to their own understanding of the Bible. No one can force someone to believe, practice or support a view that is not their own. We are not abused, beaten or murdered because of our beliefs. We have something to be thankful for even if we have nothing else.

Unfortunately even that freedom is in danger. Watch the news and read the papers. There are forces at work that are attempting to impose limits on our freedom. Slowly step by step our freedoms are disappearing. If we are not careful in a few generations our children and grandchildren will be suffering like our forefathers did.

It is not too late to stop it though. God is still powerful and can still change the course of nations. He is most likely to do so when his people are truly thankful for what he has done for them. Being truly thankful is not just saying thanks. It is surrendering our lives to him and serving him.
