And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?
During the earthly ministry of Jesus there were many examples of how people reacted to Him. Sometimes they were good examples and sometimes they were not.
At different times in His ministry he made people angry by His teachings. Sometimes He confused them and they did not understand him. The end result was normally the same. The people either became angry and tried to kill Him or they just left Him.
Even those who received the greatest benefits from Him failed to give Him the one thing He wanted from them. He wanted them to follow Him. In this particular verse ten lepers had been cured of their disease but only one came back to thank him.
We often judge the people in the Bible. We say we would not have been like the nine. We would have come back and followed Jesus. We would have given all up.
Is that really the truth though? It is easy to say that because Jesus is not standing in front of us asking us to follow Him.
Or is He? Has He not left instructions in His word for us to follow? Have we not been told that He is the living word of God? If we will not follow His word today what makes us think we would have followed Him if we had been one of the ten lepers?
Some would say they would follow Him if He ever did a great miracle for them. Consider the ten lepers for a moment. They were cured of the disease but if they were not saved did they not still go to hell. What about you? You might still have some deadly disease but if you have been saved will you not still go to heaven? Who received the better miracle?
Let us not make excuses for our failure to follow His word. Let us confess our failure and make a change today. Do not be one of the nine.
