Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
There is no doubt, as we look about us, that people are perishing in great numbers. They may live longer and healthier than ever before. They may be more prosperous than ever before but in the end they are leaving this world and going to hell. They may have been happy in this life but what did it gain them?
They are perishing because the people have no vision. But who are those people who have no vision and what vision do they need to have?
It is certainly true that those who are dying and going to hell have no vision. The Bible says they are blind. They need to have their eyes opened to see. How are they to gain their sight? That is the work of the church. So while lost people have no vision it is because we lack vision that they continue to perish.
We need to have a vision of several things. We certainly need to have a vision of the people around us. They are real people. They are not actors in some elaborate movie put there for our pleasure. They have souls. Those souls are eternal and unless they get saved hell will be their home.
We need to have a vision of hell. It is a real place and no doubt we all know people who are there. That is a frightening thought but it is true. Imagine someone you know running here and there, tormented in the flames and calling out for help and mercy. Maybe they are even crying out to you. Yet no mercy comes. There is nothing you can do for them now. But what about those around you are still alive? Can you help them? You can certainly try.
We need to have a vision of the church as well. We often think of the church as some weak, outdated and old fashioned place people gather to talk about how good the old days were while complaining of how bad today is. Sometimes we become a people of no hope. We need to catch a vision of the church not as some dying social club but as the body of Christ. As such she has great power if we will only grab on to it.
How do we catch such a vision? Perhaps the most famous vision of all was the one John had on the Isle of Patmos and recorded in the book of Revelation. It is important to note what John was doing when he had that vision. He tells us he was in the Spirit. We often think of being in the Spirit as jumping and shouting. That is not the only way to be in the Spirit though. If we are following Jesus, if we are praying and reading our Bible, if we are doing what he tells us to do, that is being in the Spirit too. Let us be in the Spirit that we might have a vision. Hell has enough of our friends already.
