Church Bulletin August 11, 2013 – The Pillar

But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

1 Timothy 3:15

This past Wednesday we started a lesson series that will examine a very serious question, why do we lose our members and in particular why do we lose our young members?

Statistics show that seventy-five percent of young people will leave church when they leave home. Of that seventy-five percent only a small portion will ever return to church. This should be a troubling fact to all of us. If this continues to happen it will not be too long till we do not have a church at all.

This statistic and question naturally leads to another question, what can we do to stop this loss? Wednesday we started to look for a few of the answers to these questions and we will continue to do so for at least the next couple of weeks.

There were two main points discussed last week. The first was the fact that if we know what we should be doing it is a sin. The Lord has left us instructions on how to build not only his church but our lives. If we fail to follow those instructions we are sinning.

The second point was how we are to train our children and what the result will be if we do it. The central verse to this point is Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Space is too limited here to discuss the full impact of this verse but it is good to remember there are two things necessary for training to be done right. The first is there must be a trainer. The trainer must not only be willing to train he or she must have the knowledge to train. The second is there must be a willing trainee.
