And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Matthew 10:42

Last week was a busy week for many of us as we worked hard to have a good Vacation Bible School. We had a good theme, Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever.

In a world that is changing rapidly it is good for us to know there is at least one thing that does not change. Our world may be moving rapidly forward in what they call progress but our Lord and Savior is not changing at all. Neither are his requirements for us.

We have had a wonderful opportunity this past week to teach the generations who are following us this very important truth. Four of our men had a chance to share what it was like growing up before cable TV, text messaging and the internet (in some cases even electricity and indoor plumbing!)

Our students also learned some old fashioned crafts such as making butter, quilts and pickles. I have not tried the pickles yet but the butter was quite good. Brother Chad Wix taught our students that ice cream was not always served at Culvers, Ritters or Cold Stone. He showed them how people used to make their own. If you missed it you missed a lot.

Outside children saw what it was like to entertain yourself without Nintendo, Playstation and Angry Birds. Stilts, jacks and sticks were the tools of choice.

Back inside the children learned to sing songs about Jesus. They even learned the old song Glory, Glory Glory. We are looking for and praying for the day when they all can stand up on what will be a great day no matter what day of the week it is.

Of course all of this was a lot of work and not a little expense. At times it seemed pretty rough. It was worth it though. I know of at least one little girl who was going on and on about VBS during the day because she was so excited to get back and learn about Jesus and play with the other children. When I asked the children had fun they responded loudly and in the affirmative. Those were just a few things that made and make it worth it.

There are other rewards too. Jesus was keeping a record and that record will not be lost. He may have already rewarded us for our labor of love. If He has not He will, not only in this world but in the world to come.

There were no doubt children who came whose families are not in church or not in a good church. We need to try to reach out to them. We need to pray for them. So VBS may be over but our work is not. May God bless the latter end of our work as well as He did the former.
