Would You Hire This Person
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Have you ever wondered why it is so hard to get people to come to church? We invite and invite (I hope!) Yet we see so little return on our efforts.
There are many reasons for our low success rate. Many of them are beyond our control. We cannot worry too much about those but we can ask the Lord to intervene. What is beyond our control is not beyond his.
Our focus must be on those reasons which we have at least some, if not complete, control over. Our goal must be to remove every reason a person has for not coming to this church.
One thing to understand about our church is that we are a service industry. You might not like the term but the principle is true. Our purpose is to serve God, one another and the community.
Like any other service industry we must have opportunity to serve to succeed. We are also not the only source for the services we offer. There are some very good and sound churches in our area. There are also a large number of unsound churches in the area. We may know the difference but the people we are trying to reach out to and serve may not.
One of the primary focuses of the church is to make disciples. It is the job of the church not only to evangelize but to teach those who are saved how to live like God wants them too. Historically our churches have held firm to good evangelistic practices but have had some shortcomings in the discipleship area. This hurts our ability to bring in new people.
Let me illustrate: If you wanted to really get into shape and decided to hire a personal trainer what kind of things would make you likely to hire someone? What kind of things would make you less likely to hire someone? Would you hire a trainer who was out of shape? Someone who could stand to lose more than a few pounds and had no muscle tone? Or would you look for someone in top condition? I think we all know the answer to that question.
People look at churches the same way. If they really want to become more like the person God wants them to be they are going to look for people who reflect their idea of that person. If they see a church full of hypocrites they will keep on looking. Let’s make sure they see the former and not the latter here at Bethel.
