And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
Each of us have certain necessities of life, things that we need to exist. We also have certain things we would like to have but are not actually in need of. We have goals and we have ambitions. It has always been this way and it always will be while this world stands.
Often times we have competing goals and ambitions. For example, we might know we need to eat healthier and exercise but the junk food and the couch are always calling. Still, when we look in the mirror we know what we need to do but like Paul we have a hard time doing it.
When we look in the mirror it is easy for us to remember what we need to do to look better and feel better. However, we need to remember this life is about more than just this body. We also have a soul.
Both soul and body are accountable to God’s plan for our life. It is easy for us to forget that in this busy world and focus solely on the natural things. This has been going on for a long time as evidenced by the man who was about to build some new barns.
Unfortunately while he was focused on the natural things of the world he had forgotten that he was going to be judged not on the size of his barns but the condition of his soul. God was going to hold him accountable.
There is a lesson for us in this man’s lack of wisdom. Let us always be on guard and remember that some day our soul we be required of us too. My prayer is that each of us, when God calls, will find that though we may be poor in this world our souls are rich in faith.
That is the advice Jesus gave his disciples. He told them to seek first the kingdom of heaven. As the old joke goes, we never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul. What we gain in this world stays in this world but what Jesus does for our souls is eternal.
