The Good Book
As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
2 Peter 3:16
The Bible is the best-selling book of all time. It is said that more than 6 billion copies have been sold. From a recent article by Lamar Vest, President and CEO of the American Bible Society, and published on Foxnews.com, I learned some interesting things. For example, a recent survey showed that 9 out of 10 American households have a Bible and 86% of the people surveyed held the opinion that the Bible was sacred or holy.
Unfortunately owning a Bible or declaring its importance are not enough. The Bible is a book to be read, understood and lived! The evidence in our nation is certainly that those 90% of homes who own a Bible and 86% of people who say the Bible is holy are not living the Bible. If they were we would live in a much different country.
When it comes to understanding the Bible it can be difficult. There are some very plain principles that are taught however. One of those principles involves the nature and purpose of the family. Surely our nation has turned that one upside down. It is rarer today to find a family that fits the Biblical model than it is to find one that does not. Things which the Bible forbids have become the norm in our society.
One of the saddest things in our society is the attempt to take the Bible and twist its meaning. It happens every day. People try to use the Bible to justify themselves. There are so many verses that people use out of context that it is scary. For example, how many times have you heard judge not used out of context? People have certainly wrested this verse out of its context, just as we are told in our verse for today, and have decided no one has any right to say anything about what anyone else is doing. This is very far from the truth.
It is sad when we see the world misusing the Bible. There is a sadder misuse of the Bible though. It happens when people who claim to belong to Christ do it. Let us be careful with the word of God. It is eternal and unchanging. Some day we will be judged by what God intended and not what we thought it meant. Be careful lest the very word of God, which is intended to help us, stand against us in the judgment.
